What Is “The Best Kinds of Confidence” Sutta?
“The Best Kinds of Confidence” is a teaching from the Buddha that discusses four kinds of confidence that lead to the best possible outcomes in life. These confidences are in the Buddha, the Dhamma (teachings), the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Sangha (the community of noble disciples). The Buddha explains that when we place our trust in these pillars, we align ourselves with the highest potential for happiness, growth, and ultimate liberation.
Exploring the Four Kinds of Confidence
- Confidence in the Buddha: The Buddha is the embodiment of awakened potential. To have confidence in the Buddha is to recognize the possibility of complete awakening within ourselves.
- Confidence in the Noble Eightfold Path: The path to liberation—right view, right intention, right speech, and more—is the best guide to a life free from suffering.
- Confidence in Dispassion (Nibbana): This refers to the freedom from craving, which brings true peace and liberation.
- Confidence in the Sangha: The community of practitioners serves as our guide, inspiration, and support, helping us stay committed to our path.
In this episode, we read the sutta in its entirety and provide a thoughtful walkthrough commentary. We explore each of these confidences in a way that connects with our modern lives, allowing you to reflect deeply on where you place your trust. This reflection can be transformative as you discover whether your confidence lies in things that uplift you or in things that are impermanent and unreliable.
